What does “flowing with life” mean?
Flowing is not about resigning yourself to the present or disconnecting from it. On the contrary, it's about inhabiting it consciously. It's about letting go of the need for control and gently opening yourself to change. It involves listening to the body, observing the mind without judgment, and allowing ourselves to feel without clinging.
Neuroscientifically, the state of "flow"—described by psychologist Mihály Csíkszentmihályi—occurs when we are so present that we lose track of time. This state is associated with greater well-being, creativity, and a profound sense of connection with oneself and one's surroundings.
But beyond performance, flow is also an act of self-love: permission to let go of what hurts, to take care of ourselves intentionally, and to trust that we are exactly where we need to be.
Taking care of yourself is also a way of letting go
Conscious self-care goes beyond healthy habits. It's an internal stance. It means asking ourselves honestly:
What do I need today to feel at peace with myself?
Sleeping well, eating mindfully, surrounding yourself with nourishing people, moving from a place of pleasure, setting clear boundaries. All of that is self-care… but it's also letting go: of exhaustion, judgment, and self-imposed pressure.
Numerous studies in positive psychology and integrative medicine have shown that practices such as daily gratitude, connecting with nature, and relaxation rituals help reduce cortisol levels (the stress hormone) and strengthen the immune system. Taking care of yourself is biologically transformative.
The power of letting go: emotional health and neuroplasticity
From neuroscience we know that the brain does not distinguish between a repeated thought and a real experience: everything that is mentally held becomes a stronger neural network.
That's why letting go is urgent. What isn't released, accumulates.
Emotions like guilt, fear, or resentment have direct effects on our nervous system. The practice of letting go—through forgiveness, writing, meditation, or mindful movement—allows us to activate neuroplasticity: the brain's ability to create new connections and pathways.
Letting go is, simply put, clearing space for the new.
